Quality Disclosure: January 2019 Release

Keycult Quality Disclosures are made to inform buyers of any potential flaws in the items they are buying. Low-volume manufacturing is error-prone, and while we do our best to avoid issues through sampling and prototyping, it is not always possible to avoid all issues in the production run. Instead of surprising customers with flaws they did not expect, we will do our best to shed light on them through these Quality Disclosures.

 

No. 1/60 and No. 1/65 keyboards. Everyone buying a kit without the explicit label of b-stock should expect the following:

  • There should be no scuffs or scratches on the case top, sides, or bottom.
  • There may be a few small but potentially noticeable spots or scratches on the inside (vertical) faces of the case top — these are hook marks from how the case tops were hung in the anodizing bath.
  • There may be minor machining/tooling marks on internal faces.
  • There may be scratches or scuffs on the internal top face of aluminum mid parts (the same face as the N of 15 engraving) — these are hook marks from how the case mids were hung in the anodizing bath.
  • There may be anodization discoloration on the top internal face of aluminum mid parts (the same face as the N of 15 engraving) — this appears to be the result of improper handling of these parts without gloves before anodization.
  • There may be anodization defects, scuffs, or scratches on the inner top face of case bottoms (the face that the case mid slots into).

The issues described above are largely the result of our manufacturer believing that internal faces are not aesthetically important. In the future we will try to better communicate that every part of the case is important, even if you only see it once while building your keyboard.

 

WT-60A and WT-65A PCBs. Our clear soldermask-over-copper PCBs were an experiment, and while many of them are very visually striking, there is a varying amount of milkiness or fogginess around traces and pads. At the moment, this appears to be a defect in the overall process of creating PCBs in this way, and all of our inventory will have this issue to some degree. We'll look into other options to avoid this in the future.
